City of Nampa celebrates Arbor Day with tree planting April 28

Nampa Parks Dept Arbor Day

The City of Nampa and Nampa Parks Department will celebrate Arbor Day* Wed., April 28, 2021 by planting three trees on the Nampa Recreation Center grounds.

The City of Nampa is celebrating its 22nd year as a Tree City USA which is a designation received from the Arbor Day Foundation and Idaho Department of Lands. Nampa has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA:  a tree board and department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and holding an Arbor Day observance.

Children from the Nampa Recreation Center, located at 131 Constitution Way, are expected to help plant the three Canadian Red Chokecherry trees with the help of forestry staff at 10:00 a.m. Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling will read the Arbor Day proclamation followed by students learning how to properly plant trees. This is an opportunity for the public to learn the basic skills of tree planting along with the importance of urban forestry ahead of Arbor Day.

Nampa Parks Superintendent Cody Swander said, “The City of Nampa is proud to celebrate Arbor Day each year with our ceremonial tree planting within the public spaces of our community.  Nampa’s Forestry Division works hard to ensure our urban forest is diverse, healthy and managed to provide all of the benefits that trees bring to our community.  As we honor the roots of Arbor Day from 1872 in Nebraska with Stirling Morton, Nampa celebrates the meaning of Arbor Day by planting trees with some of Nampa’s children, we strive to instill a respect and understanding to a younger generation that trees are important and a worthy part of a city’s infrastructure that are worth protecting.”

*Arbor Day is typically celebrated the last Friday in April and will be officially recognized this year on Fri., April 30, 2021.
