Community invited to Nampa’s Christmas Market & Tree Lighting November 30

Christmas Market and Tree Lighting Save the date

In preparation for the annual Christmas Tree lighting on Saturday, Nov. 30, the City of Nampa, with help from Qualitree, will cut down a donated blue spruce tree and install it at its new location Thurs., Nov. 14 in front of Downtown Nampa’s Train Depot.

Ms. Frankie Airehart Foster is donating the 40-foot evergreen for the tree lighting celebration. Mrs. Airehart Foster had been concerned the tree’s current location was too close to her house’s foundation and decided to down the tree before foundation damage occurred. Mrs. Airehart Foster reached out to the Parks staff earlier this year and offered the tree for the City’s tree lighting.

Jon Wakelam, owner of Qualitree, has been donating his services every year to cut down and transport the Christmas tree to its temporary home for the Christmas season.

The Nampa Parks Division will decorate the tree with approximately 2,500 lights prior to Thanksgiving and the lights will be switched on at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, and wrap up Shop Small Saturday activities in Downtown Nampa.

NEW! This year the City of Nampa is expanding its tree lighting festivities to compliment Shop Small Saturday on November 30 and includes:

  • Story time with Mrs. Claus will take place at the Nampa Public Library from 1-1:30 p.m.
  • Christmas Market in Lloyd Square’s “long building” from 12-5 p.m. Food trucks, coffee, kettle corn and roasted nuts will be available for purchase in Lloyd Square and a variety of live entertainment can be enjoyed.
  • “Selfie with Santa” will take place from 3-5 p.m. in Lloyd Square’s main building and the community is invited to take personal images with Santa and Mrs. Claus.
  • Free horse-driven carriage rides will be available between 3 and 5 p.m. near Lloyd Square (new location!), thanks to the Downtown Business Association and the following sponsors: Idaho Central Credit Union, D.L. Evans Bank, HDR, Borders Equine Clinic, Treasure Valley Wellness Counseling and Training Center.

The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 5:15 p.m. in front of the Nampa Train Depot and feature entertainment from Silver Bells, Victory Arts Charter School Choir, and the Encore Theatre Carolers. The event also serves as a kickoff to the Salvation Army’s Kettle Drive and free hot chocolate and cider will be served.

Immediately following the tree lighting, Santa & Mrs. Claus will make a special appearance and available for photos in front of the tree where parents can take photos. The Canyon County Historical Society Museum will be open and available for tours ahead of the tree lighting.

The City would also like to thank the following sponsors for their support: Qualitree, Idaho Press, Ford Idaho Center and Nampa Civic Center.

STREET CLOSURES: With the tree in the middle of 12th Avenue at Front Street, thru-traffic will be diverted to 11th and 13th avenues to access the parking lots, and Front Street, but business access will remain open. The day of the tree lighting, additional detours/closures will be made starting at noon. The public is encouraged to take advantage of free parking all day in the Downtown Garage November 30.
