Trees Vandalized in West Park - (Nampa, January 12, 2010) A reward is being offered to find the person or persons responsible for vandalizing more than 100 trees over the weekend in West Park in Nampa.
On Friday, January 8th, the City Forester had been marking several potentially hazardous trees for removal because of disease and splits in the trunks. While marking the trees he was approached by several young men in their 20’s who asked what he was doing and became very angry that trees might be removed. The Forester explained trees had the potential of injuring the public if all or part of the tree fell and trees had already been planted to replace those being removed. The men continued to argue with the city employee and the employee finally left the area.
When the City Forester returned to the park on Monday he found 107 additional trees had been spray painted with similar markings he had used on the trees that were to be removed. It could take a few years before the paint fades or weather helps wear the paint off the trees.
To provide information on those responsible for the vandalism and to claim the reward, please call 468-5890. Those responsible will be prosecuted.
The city parks and forestry’s goal is evaluate all trees for public safety of the public park and protect the community. The City Forestry Departments tries to not condemn but preserve trees at all costs through its pruning schedule and tree maintenance programs. Removal of the tree is a last resort to provide for the safety of those who use the park, and if removed the tree is replaced.

| Possible Hazardous Tree Removal - (Nampa, January 8, 2010) If you have a potentially hazardous tree in the right of way you are encouraged to call the Nampa City Parks Department. The City hopes to receive federal stimulus money that would pay to remove and replace some of the trees in both the parks and right of way.
There is no guarantee in amount of money the city will receive. To qualify for the federal money, the City Forester must identify potential trees to be removed and replaced, get an estimate for the work to be done, and then make the formal request for funding.
To possibly qualify, property must be in city limits and the tree must be located in the strip of ground between the sidewalk and the road. It must be a potential hazard in the near future with one of the following problems: 1. cracked or split trunk, 2. crack or split that affects a large sections of limbs, 3. tree has been topped, or 4. tree is diseased.
If residents think they may have a tree that would qualify they need to contact 468-5748 by January 22, 2010.
