The city will begin safety improvements to pedestrian crossings on 12th Avenue South at the intersections of Sherman Avenue and 11th Street South in early March.
In response to a high number of accidents over recent years, including bicycle and pedestrian injuries, the city will install High Intensity Activated Pedestrian Beacon (HAWK) crossings on 12th Ave. S. at 11th St. S. and Sherman Ave. Construction will also include street lighting, signage, striping and pedestrian ramps. The city received federal funding through the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council’s (LHTAC) Safety Program to install the HAWK crossings.
Work will primarily occur on the roadway shoulder. Impact to nearby businesses and the public should be minimal. The roadway will be closed for two nights, one night at each location, to install mast arms for the signals. The date for the closure has not been determined yet. Traffic will be detoured to adjacent streets during the closures.
Construction is anticipated to be completed in mid-May. The contractor is Quality Electric.
