Memorial Day Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at Kohlerlawn Cemetery

The city of Nampa will hold a Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the men and women who were in the service for our country and many who have made the supreme sacrifice of giving their lives so that we might live in freedom.

The one-hour ceremony begins at 10 a.m. May 30 at the Veteran’s Loop of Kohlerlawn Cemetery, 76 6th St. N. Nampa. Chief Master Sergeant Harold Bongiovi will give the keynote speech.

Retired Railroad Police Officer Bill Dean will lead Memorial Day Walking tours at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., starting at Veteran's Loop. These tours give a brief narrative on Nampa's Historic individuals. A shuttle will be provided for patrons who may have difficulty with the cemetery terrain.

Cemetery tours will highlight prominent historical citizens, stories

If you are looking for something different to do on Memorial Day, you may want to consider doing one of two tours – set for 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – at Kohlerlawn Cemetery in Nampa.

Bill Dean will give a brief narrative on some of Nampa's historic individuals, including Nampa founder Alexander Duffes, entrepreneur and miner Col. W.H. Dewey, Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient and Korean War hero Herbert A. Littleton, early day doctor Joseph Howard Murray Sr., World War I veteran Joseph Howard Murray Jr. and Nampa police officer Hugh Nichols, who was killed while on duty.

Dean will also highlight Kenneth McLennan, one of the first convicted murderers in Canyon County; Dr. Kohler, who donated the first few acres to the city of Nampa, to be used as a cemetery; Tot Tuttle, who died in Butte, Mont., from scarlet fever; Doc Hisom, one of the first African American veterinarians, and the Ullery and Shellaberger families killed in an automobile and train accident in 1919.
